Maximiliano's wish to have books

Maximiliano's wish to have books

“ His face lights up every time he turns a page ”

- Maximiliano's mom

Before Maximiliano (“Max”) was born, his mom knew that he would be different. He was born with a genetic condition involving excess water in his brain that required immediate surgery. The excess fluids did not allow his brain to fully develop in the womb and as a result Max lacks verbal abilities. Now 9 years old, Max recently qualified for a wish.

Because he is non-verbal, he could not ask for this wish with his own words but instead communicated through his mother, who informed the Make-A-Wish volunteers that “he loves books and his face lights up every time he turns a page. They fascinate him.”

Upon hearing this, Max’s Make-A-Wish team knew exactly how to fulfill his wish. They decided to create his own library and reading space in his home. The family was surprised and overwhelmed when the volunteers came through the door with a big collection of books as well as bookshelves, a rug, toys, and puppets.

The impact of the wish was immediate. According to his mom, Max has always been “a very caring, joyful and happy child who loves interacting with the world.” Once his wish was granted she noticed some changes. “He definitely interacts more with us individually and as a family. Just because he can’t talk doesn’t mean he isn’t speaking or communicating with us. He laughs a lot when he plays with the toys and he loves it when his dad and brother sing to him.”

Max’s family is very grateful for everything that was given to Max and the positive effect it has had on them all. In their eyes, Make-A-Wish does more than just make wishes come true. According to Max’s mom, “everything that Make-A-Wish has given to Max allows us to reach him, keep in contact with him and be a family. Seeing him so happy and light up and smile just means the world to us as parents. Thank you to all of those at Make-A-Wish who are working and volunteering, for investing your time and energy in us and for helping kids who are going through tough times. Thank you for caring and making wishes come true.”
