FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MAKE-A-WISH® CELEBRATES 30TH YEAR IN LOS ANGELES WITH LAUNCH OF THE “100% WISH” CAMPAIGN
Chapter Aims to Double Dollars, Airline Miles Donations and Volunteers; Campaign Kicks Off with Granting of 8,056th Wish
LOS ANGELES (April 1, 2013) – Today, Make-A-Wish® Greater Los Angeles celebrates its 30th Anniversary with the launch of the “100% Wish” campaign. Aimed to double dollars, airline miles donations and volunteers, the chapter will then be able to serve all 1,000 eligible children diagnosed with a life-threatening illness each year in Los Angeles County. The long-term goal will be jump-started by a “30:30:30” month-long call-to-action and celebrated with the granting of the 8,056th wish to 11-year-old i’Joni Johnson of Pacoima.
“Make-A-Wish has had a significant impact on countless children and their families over our 30-year history,” said Breena F. Gold, CEO and president of Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles. “As we celebrate this milestone year, we also must accelerate our fundraising and volunteer base to be in the position to grant all of the eligible wish requests received by the chapter in the future.”
The chapter will celebrate its anniversary throughout 2013, which includes two major events: the sixth annual “Walk for Wishes” on July 13th on the historic and cinematic streets of the Universal Studios Backlot as well as culminate the year with its holiday “Wishing Well” Gala in December.
“100% Wishes” Calls for Money, Miles and Minds
Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles will be encouraging Angelenos to help in three ways to achieve its “100% Wish” goal through the donation of:
- MONEY: Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles chapter will grant 425 wishes this year with an annual budget of $4.6 million. To reach its “100% Wish” goal, annual donations must top $10 million.
- MILES: This year alone, Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles will send about 325 kids and their families on a plane to grant their wish….that’s 1,300 tickets or 71 million miles. To achieve the “100% Wish” goal , 3,040 tickets or 168 million miles are needed.
- MINDS: Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles needs creative minds, passionate people and community leaders to make wishes happen. An average wish has two volunteers working seamlessly with the chapter’s internal wish team. To achieve the “100% Wish” goal, double the amount of bi-lingual volunteers are needed since more than 60 percent of wish requests come from Spanish-speaking homes in Los Angeles.
30:30:30 April-Timed Call-to-Action
From the local chapter Facebook page to radio, Make-A-Wish will encourage Angelenos to join the celebration with a $30 donation. Statistically, that means only 10,000 out of 9.9 million Angelenos need to donate $30. From donating $30 at wishla.org or via text message three times (text to donate $10 by texting “DONATE” to 80088 throughout April 2013), the month-long goal is to raise $300,000 to grant approximately 30 wishes.
Make-A-Wish 1983 and 2013
On April 1, the Los Angeles chapter received its charter and granted its first wish that month to 11-year-old Gary from Ventura. The simple “I Wish to Have…a VCR” was accompanied by a year of free video rentals. Thirty years later, 11-year-old i’Joni Johnson, who has been diagnosed with an optic glioma, will be granted the chapter’s 8,056th wish. The exciting “I Wish to Go….to WrestleMania” wish will be revealed to him with a surprise knock on the door by a team of volunteers. Later this week, he and his family will leave Pacoima and board a plane to New Jersey for the spectacular showdown of WWE Superstars taking place on April 7th at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
“Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles has granted more than 8,000 wishes in the past three decades – and we are honored to share this milestone with i’Joni and his family,” said Gold. “As you can see from our first wish 30 years ago, technology has changed with the times, but the power of a wish remains timeless.”
The Greater Los Angeles chapter of Make-A-Wish was formed in 1983 and celebrates its 30th Anniversary on April 1, 2013. Since the chapter’s beginning, more than 8,000 wishes have been granted to children facing a life-threatening medical condition.
