Thomas is a passionate, determined 13-year-old who loves his family. He has a deep affinity for his Chinese culture and for his loving grandparents, who live in China. So it was very difficult for him to be apart from them for six years. In fact, he thought he wouldn’t be able to visit China until they were much older and possibly not as mobile. When Make-A-Wish Los Angeles contacted him, Thomas knew exactly where he wanted to go, or rather exactly who he wanted to see.
After arriving in China, Thomas’ first stop was to see the famous terracotta warriors. This was an inspiring experience for him not only because of the sheer beauty, but also because he was so intrigued by their history. The fact that archaeologists were able to continuously unearth pieces of the warriors, put them back together, and create an awe-inspiring spectacle really impressed him. This made Thomas feel like if people could do that, then people could do anything. He took that mentality back home with him, and with a revitalized drive to do better in school, he ended up finishing first in his class.
Thomas continued his trek in China and explored the tomb of one of the most famed Chinese warriors throughout history. He adored being fully immersed in Chinese culture, and seeing all the incredible history it has to offer. However, his favorite part of the trip was traveling to the city of Dalian and visiting his grandparents. After so many years apart, seeing them was a surreal experience: “When they picked us up, I couldn’t believe it. I was here in Dalian with my grandparents - it was a dream come true,” he said.
Thomas made the absolute most of his trip to China. Although he saw and did so many fun things, being able to see his grandparents and his other relatives is the experience he is most thankful for. After returning home from his trip with a renewed spirit and passion for life, Thomas feels like he could do anything, and we can’t help but agree.
