Eleven-year-old Nichole’s hands were hurting so badly, she couldn’t dress herself. By the time her Mom was able to get her to the doctor, Nichole could no longer walk. She was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s own immune system. In Nichole’s devastating case, her brain and kidneys were being severely attacked at rapid speed.
After being diagnosed, Nichole was able to get treatments to minimize flare-ups and improve her quality of life. However, there is no cure for lupus and she will live with this painful condition for the rest of her life.
Thankfully, Nichole’s family was referred to Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles and learned about the possibility of experiencing a life-changing wish.
When our volunteers arrived to help Nichole discover her wish, her Mom encouraged her to get something just for herself although she wanted to get something for the entire family. After spending so much time inside battling her illness, Nichole decided she wanted a yorkie puppy named Marshmallow to keep her company.
Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles hosted a puppy shower for the new dog Mom-to-be with “It’s a boy!” décor and all the puppy care items imaginable. Nichole thought that was all she would be getting that day, but to her utter surprise, her yorkie, Marshmallow, was presented to her. She cried happy tears as she received countless puppy kisses from her new best friend.
A month later, her Mom reports that Marshmallow has settled into his new home and Nichole is beyond happy and exhibiting many positive changes.
“Before she wasn’t active and was always thinking about being sick. Now she wants to go to the park and play and run. She says she doesn’t even feel sick because she’s thinking about the puppy. She’s a totally different Nichole.” – Nichole’s Mom
